Tokyo and several prefectures around the giant city may be in a state of emergency.

This was stated by the Prime Minister of Japan, Yoshihide Suga, at a press conference.

The reason is that just over 4,500 new cases of corona infections were registered on New Year’s Eve and that the government wants to stop the new outbreak. The Tokyo area accounts for just over half of all covid cases in the country and politicians responsible for the area have asked the government for more help.

Suga says he wants to avoid a total closure of Tokyo as much as possible, aware of the economic damage it could inflict on the country.

Until further notice, restaurants and karaoke bars can only be open until 8:00 PM and all those serving alcohol must close at 7:00 PM.

– The number of cases in Stortokyo did not drop even during the three days of the New Year celebrations. We think a clearer message is needed, Suga said.

Large areas of the country lived with emergency permits in April and May of last year.

On weekdays, Japan imposed a temporary entry ban on foreign visitors, meaning that only Japanese citizens and non-Japanese living in the country will be admitted in January, but they will have to be quarantined for 14 days.
