Some 9,000 people are said to have moved to the Lesbos temporary camp.
Most of the people whose houses were destroyed by the fire in the Moria refugee camp on Lesbos have moved to a temporary camp, announces the Greek Ministry of Migration. Earlier this week, there were reports that around 1,000 people had moved to Kara Tepe, north of Mytilene. It is said that around 9,000 of the 12,700 people living in Moria went to the hastily organized camp.
Following the 9 September fire that devastated most of Moria, local people and aid organizations have been pushing for refugees and migrants to leave Lesbos. Greece has blamed residents of the camp for the fires and five migrants have been arrested and charged with being involved in the fires.
The message from the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, to Greece is clear: the new camp is a temporary solution, nothing that is sustainable in the long term. The ruined field of Moria has received harsh criticism for many years for its poor condition. It was built during the migration crisis of 2015 and has capacity for 3,000 people.
