The Australian state of Queensland is in jeopardy after a man hosted a house party ahead of his crowned test result, which later turned out to be positive.
Life has been able to continue as usual in Australia for much of the pandemic. This November, almost 50,000 spectators were able to watch the rugby match between New South Wales and Queensland.
The man from Strathpine, north of Brisbane, had been tested for COVID-19 and had received the usual Australian instructions to isolate himself until the test result was negative.
But the man in his 20s completely ignored him and threw a house party with 25 people participating.
Once the test came, it turned out to be positive, and everyone who attended the party was ordered to isolate themselves for two weeks. The man is believed to have been infected by a 26-year-old friend, who in turn had time to visit various places, such as shopping malls and restaurants, before the infection was confirmed. The 26-year-old’s infection is linked to a small outbreak in a hospital two weeks ago.
At present, there appear to be no new stops. But Queensland has been quick to close areas in the past if transmission is feared.
– The next two days will be critical for us. But if we all continue with the testing and tracking of infections, then I will feel comfortable with how we are, says Prime Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk at a press conference.
One who also wants to avoid shutdowns is the country’s prime minister, Scott Morrison.
Across Australia, there are currently 150 people with confirmed covid-19, almost all of them have returned home from abroad. A person with the disease is cared for in an intensive care unit.
