Louise Glück receives the award “for her unmistakable poetic voice, which with austere beauty makes the existence of the individual human being universal”.
Permanent Secretary Mats Malm has spoken with Nobel Laureate Louise Glück and has shared the news with her.
– She was surprised and happy, despite the early hour, she says.
– She is one of the most prominent poets in contemporary American literature, says Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee.
– There is also a lot of humor and wit in his poetry, he says. He writes a lot about his childhood experiences, so there is something Freudian in what he writes. It also develops gradually in his writing, which makes it very interesting to follow his way of thinking.
How has working with the external Nobel Committee been?
– It has been an adventure in the way we have had to develop new forms. For me, it has been stimulating, the discussion has broadened. I think the Nobel’s work has been positive.
– What we will do in more detail, we will do it again during the fall. But I can say that we want to expand the experience of the area in our work. So we will hire experts in the areas where we need additional expertise, says Anders Olsson.

Louise Glück was born in 1943 in New York and since her debut in 1968 has published twelve collections of poems.
– There are not so many metaphors. his poems are close to what is told, says his Swedish translator Jonas Brun.
She has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Prize and is one of the most admired and influential poets in American poetry, often mentioned in discussions of the Nobel Prize. It was presented in Swedish in 2017 with “Averno” translated by Jonas Brun. In 2019, Stewe Claeson translated his book “Ararat”.
This year, the ad received a suit tailored to the crown. The press contingent on the site is significantly smaller than usual and only a handful of journalists are on the site.
Also, the Nobel Festival itself is canceled. This year’s Nobel Prize in Literature cannot come to Stockholm to receive his award either. This year, the Nobel Prize will be awarded in each of the winners’ home countries, probably at the Swedish Embassy, and the awards will be televised.
