Behind the high walls of Herstedvester Prison are some of Denmark’s most dangerous criminals. The closed room has 141 seats. Many of the inmates, among other things, have been convicted of sex crimes, writes DR.

Leaks are unusual. Former prison chief Hans Jørgen Engbo Hansen can barely remember when someone last tried, he tells DR.

But tuesday Peter Madsen, sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall, makes an attempt.

With what appears to be a pistol and a pump belt, the 49-year-old takes a psychologist hostage at the institution. Through threats he manages to get out of the prison. There he threatens another prison employee, who frees Madsen so that no one is harmed.

– The weapon was realistic, so the prison guards at the door did not dare to take any risks in relation to the hostage, which they judged to be life threatening and chose to lock him through the door, says Bo Yde Sørensen, president of the prison staff union, to Ekstrabladet.

When madsen leaves the building, free the hostages. At the same time, prison staff are alerting the police. The call comes in at 10.21.

Video footage of the escape attempt shows how Madsen, after exiting the building, runs out of the area. A prison guard yells “Stop. LIE.”

Another video from a surveillance camera shows Madsen later passing a parking lot in the Albertslund industrial zone. He wears dark clothes and a backpack. It is now 10:23. Shortly after, the prison guards come running after him.

500 meters from the prison, on Nyvej Street, Madsen gets into a white van a few minutes later. According to the police, he threatens the driver with the gun-like object and yells:

– Drive, drive, drive otherwise I’ll shoot.

But the car stays standing in place. Police surround the vehicle and remove the 49-year-old man, who is positioned next to the grass at the side of the road. So it’s 10:26 and it’s been five minutes since the alarm.

Since the police cannot rule out that the bomb belt contains explosives, Madsen remains on the grass for nearly three hours while the bomb squad robot works. At the same time, two policemen pointed their guns at the 49-year-old man.

When he is removed from the scene at 1 o’clock, the police discover that the belt was a mannequin.

After the escape attempt says the head of the institution that no one was physically injured, but that the incident was psychologically stressful for those involved. On Wednesday, Bo Yde Sørensen says that the psychologist who was taken hostage has mental problems but after the drama.

– She knew very well what he was capable of and what he came up with, so she was aware that it could be really serious, she tells BT.

On Wednesday, the Glostrup district court ruled that Madsen would be detained for 14 days. Police suspect that one or more people helped him escape. Madsen himself has admitted all the allegations in connection with the escape attempt, but says he acted on his own.
