This is how the mass vaccination against covid-19 in Västra Götaland is planning

The spread of the infection is accelerating in western Sweden and the end of the corona pandemic appears increasingly to be in the hands of vaccine doses that must be approved by the EU.

The Västra Götaland region expects to receive 50,000 doses in January and almost 500,000 in February.

Those doses then need to be given to priority groups before the vaccines are available to the public.

To be able to vaccinate en masse, external actors will be incorporated.

– We’re in the middle of a pandemic, healthcare is already under great pressure and we can’t just use our own facilities, says Kristine Rygge, the region’s vaccine coordinator.

“Difficult for anyone to guarantee”

– Our plan is for the vaccine to be given to priority groups and then to the public, but it is difficult to say exactly when.

The government previously promised that everyone over the age of 18 will be vaccinated against COVID-19 during the first half of next year.

Kristine Rygge doesn’t dare promise that.

– I think it is difficult for someone to guarantee it before the vaccine is given. But we are not waiting for anything but doses, we have the planning, but we also need the vaccine.

“Have a good collaboration”

GT has previously reported that primary care in Norra Bohuslän and Dalsland is looking for retired nurses before vaccinations.

This is not something that has a centralized demand.

– We are very happy for everyone who wants to help with vaccinations. Bringing in newly retired healthcare staff is a great idea. But it is not something that we will obtain centrally, it is up to each health center to bring the help that is needed, says Kristine Rygge.

Is there anything to worry about in planning, other than the uncertainty of when the vaccine will be approved and how many doses you will receive?

– No, I think we are doing well, we have a good collaboration between the municipalities, primary care, hospitals and us in the planning group that we take the issue further all the time.
