Sports holidays are approaching and like other recent holidays, there are special conditions.
Many apply Swedish mountains, previously reported by DN. If you get sick shortly before departure, the most comprehensive home insurance usually have cancellation protection that can be used by presenting a valid medical certificate.
In some insurance companies, a positive COVID-19 test is equated with a medical certificate, while for others it is the picture of the disease that decides, regardless of what the COVID-19 test shows. If you only have symptoms, there is no guarantee that insurance will cover a canceled trip.
– Insurance companies should provide reasonable compensation if you happen to have covid-19, even if you only have milder symptoms. But check with your insurance company to be completely sure, says Anna-Karin Baltzari Danfors, director of Konsumenternas Försäkringsbyrå.
Försäkringsbolagen If, Folksam and Länsförsäkringar informs DN that a medical certificate is required for this type of compensation to take effect and that mild symptoms that prevent you from going do not automatically mean that you can receive compensation.
– We have a cancellation protection if you are sick, but we do not have a protection that goes into effect because the authorities have restrictions. If you’re sick, we don’t care if you have a cold or COVID-19, we don’t make a difference, says Jenny Rudslätt, If’s claims manager.
There is generally no additional protection within travel insurance that covers costs if you need to be quarantined if you experience symptoms of illness and need to isolate yourself in accommodation.
– It must be that you have been diagnosed with a disease. If there is an additional cost of accommodation or you cannot get home because tickets cannot be rebooked, there is compensation, says Hélène Mood, a travel injury specialist at Folksam.
Anna-Karin Baltzari Danfors Konsumenternas Försäkringsbyrå advises you to keep all receipts if you become ill.
For travel insurance in home insurance to apply if you get sick while traveling, you must also have been symptom free for a certain period of time before, different insurance companies have different rules, but the most common is three months.
This is especially true for people who have a medical condition or have had to seek care and then fall ill again for the same reason.
– If you have had covid-19 for the last three months and then it starts to get worse, or you have problems with breathing or oxygenation, then you do not receive compensation. So in principle you should have been symptom free for three months before the trip and not have had to see a doctor during this time.
If you previously had to seek care as a result of, for example, Covid-19, but feel like you have no symptoms before departure, some insurance companies take the help of a tool that can provide an advance medical evaluation.
In other cases, the advice of a doctor is recommended. However, it is not always the doctor’s evaluation that determines whether the insurance goes into effect.
