The researchers’ hypothesis was that the load weights on the weight vests would lead to a compensatory reduction in body weight. The clinical trial included 69 people, with a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 35, the lowest rate of obesity. His instructions were to wear a weight vest eight hours a day for three weeks, and live differently as always.
All study participants wore weight vests, but were allowed to be part of one of the two groups. The control group was allowed to wear lighter vests weighing one kilo, while the treatment group was allowed to wear heavier vests weighing around eleven kilos. When the three weeks were up, the subjects wearing the heaviest vests had lost 1.6 kilos, while those wearing the light vests had lost 0.3 kilos.
“We think it is very interesting that treatment with the heavier vests reduced fat mass while muscle mass was intact at the same time,” says Professor Claes Ohlsson of the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.
Greater effect than many types of exercise.
– The effect we could see on fat mass during this short test was greater than what is generally seen after various forms of physical exercise. But we weren’t able to determine whether it was subcutaneous fat or dangerous abdominal fat that decreased – that is, the fat in the abdominal cavity that is most strongly related to cardiovascular disease and diabetes, says John-Olov Jansson, professor at the Academy. Sahlgrenska, University of Gothenburg.
Researchers have previously shown in animal studies, published in 2017, that there is a balance system that strives to keep body weight constant. Researchers have called it gravitostat. In mice, this regulation occurs, among other things. via Impact on appetite. To function, the system must include a body wash bathroom scale. The researchers’ new clinical study shows that there’s also a similar built-in bath wave in humans.
New perspective of being still
If people sit too much, it seems that the impact on the body bathroom scales will be too low. This may explain why sitting is so clearly related to obesity and ill health. Weight vests can make the impact on body weight greater, reducing body weight.
Researchers must answer many questions about how the gravity switch works. Among other things, they want to study whether the change in energy consumption, appetite and mobility contribute to the weight loss of people who are allowed to wear vests. The researchers also want to see if weight loss continues for those who wear the vest for longer than three weeks, and if the treatment reduces dangerous abdominal fat.
