Parents in Åre municipality who choose not to have their children in pre-school education may see the pre-school fee abolished next year, P4 Jämtland reports.

The proposal comes from the municipality of Åre at a time when just over 30 percent of the preschool staff is absent due to COVID-19.

Annelie Thelin, operations manager of Åre municipality preschools, says the idea of removing fees was raised among parents already this spring, when many voluntarily chose to keep their children at home due to, for example, teleworking.

– There were more who asked for it. Then we started to review it and realized that it would be a good opportunity to ease the business when we are having a bad time, Annelie Thelin tells the radio.

For their fee to be waived, preschoolers must stay home for at least one month at a time, and the absence must be reported in advance. The proposal is that the measure will be applied from January 2021 until June, with the possibility of an extension.
