Two years ago, there was talk that the nominees were unexpected and were called “bark”. This year, most of the nominated authors are veterans. Only two are debutants in the fiction category: Annika Norlin and Lydia Sandgren. Sandgren’s novel, Samlade verk, took ten years to write and is one of this year’s great talking books.
– It’s dizzying. I was raised with the idea that hard work pays off, it’s great that it turns out to be true, he says.
Veterans include, among others, Carola Hansson with Memory Threads and Thomas Tidholm, nominated for the third time, now with the book About nature, art and people.
Kingdom of terror that rules and ants that cooperate
Last year it was Patrik Svensson who taught us all about eels and at the same time took home the award in the non-fiction category. This year, the nominated books are everything from a description of nature in essay form to a book of crime stories. In Familjen, journalist Johanna Bäckström Lerneby maps a family that controls Gothenburg’s Angered district with a reign of terror.
– I am very interested in this topic, personally I think it is very exciting with these clashes and cultural contexts that one should try to describe in the most objective way possible, she says.
In this year’s non-fiction book category, Nina Burton is also nominated with her book The Thin Walls of Life, where she studies ants’ intelligence, the ability to work together, and individuality.
Pain and heartbreaking series
The nomination for a comic book album is unusual, but in the category of children’s and young adult’s literature, two comic novels have a chance to win the award. One is Alma Thörn’s comic novel Always Goodbye. The motivation of the jury is that the work is told from the child’s perspective and cuts to the heart and at the same time gives him a warm hug at the same time.
The Kråkorna book by Anders Fager and Peter Bergting is also in serial format. In his comic book novel, the reader meets Kim, who inherits an abandoned family farm where he knows a painful origin.
This year’s August Gala takes place on November 23 at the Stockholm Concert Hall.
