Thousands of jobs have disappeared during the crown crisis and for some industries the future looks bleak as the year draws to a close. Employees in commerce, hotels, restaurants and industry in particular have been hit hard.

Unemployment has risen from just over seven to almost nine percent in the last year and more than 100,000 people are at risk of ending up in long-term unemployment, according to figures from the Swedish Public Employment Service.

At the same time, fewer services will be exposed in Platsbanken in early 2021.

– The labor market will never be the same as before. The need for people with skills in technology, data and IT will continue to exist. But other services in retail may disappear, says Sandra Offesson, a labor market analyst at the Swedish Public Employment Service.

At the same time is various industries in great need of employment. The Swedish Public Employment Service estimates that there will be a shortage of 100,000 people with the right skills within five years, especially in care and education.

– There is even a serious shortage of health and care personnel. They need to hire more even in the short term and with the right experience, you can basically get a job right away, says Sandra Offesson.

The shortage is greatest for district nurses. Slightly more than nine in ten employers report a shortage of both recent graduates and professional experience in that educational group, according to the latest Statistics Sweden survey in the 2020 Labor Force Survey. of scarcity is that they earn very little.

Teachers, warehouse staff and drivers in the transportation sector also see a growing need.

– In transport, these are different types of tenders that deliver goods, which is a natural consequence of the increase in electronic commerce. It also creates a greater need for people who can work in warehouses, says Sandra Offesson.

The one who has Completed a secondary education with a clear vocational orientation will have good conditions to be employed.

However, among the unemployed registered today, 145,000 lack a full upper secondary education, which is a big reason why many are still unemployed, says Sandra Offesson.

– There will be a great need for skilled labor. The absolutely most important thing to be able to establish yourself in the job market is a high school education, says Sandra Offesson.

But in some cases, you may also need to change the industry permanently, he says.

– Bank officials are hard hit by digitization and retail. But in many career options, there is a greater variety of industries that you can work in. Take IT technicians for example, you can work in everything from an IT company to an authority.

You have become unemployed as a result of the crisis, it is also important to try to stay in touch with the job market, says Karolina Parding, professor of occupational science.

She sees that certain categories of people are worse equipped.

– If you have a lower degree of education, it is not so easy to change jobs. Often, several in this group have precarious jobs where they are fired on very short notice. When the labor market is already in crisis, these people become more vulnerable, it is clearly worrying, he says.

Karolina Parding also sees that the workplace of the future will have a different design.

– We’ll see more telecommuting. Travel before, for example, a two-hour meeting is likely to go away and we can certainly learn several lessons from the pandemic, especially from an environmental aspect, he says.
