Staff who worked despite illness and difficulties creating safe distances between residents.
These are two of the reasons why the coronavirus has spread to Swedish homes for the elderly.

The Public Health Authority began seeing an increase in the crown center in Swedish nursing homes in mid-March. Worse still, the infection has spread in the Stockholm region, followed by Sörmland.
Covid-19 has so far affected 212 of Stockholm’s 400 nursing homes.
Through a survey, the authority has sent questions to all residents to find out the reasons for the spread of the infection. The difficulty of creating safe distances between residents is highlighted as one of the reasons why the infection spread.
– Many older people find it difficult to remember and understand instructions, which is often the reason they have just moved into a retirement home. Not less people with dementia. “It worked despite the symptoms”
Existing protective equipment must have been available at the time of infection, according to the survey results. However, the survey responses indicate that the staff should have worked despite the symptoms.

Older residents have acted by limiting visits, changing meal times, and prohibiting staff working with covid-19 from staying in the kitchen. Basic hygiene has also been sharpened.
At the same time, the Public Health Agency says they want to see faster and more effective measures to continue stopping the infection in the elderly.
– Much has been done very quickly. Accommodations have changed their routines. A series of measures related to cleaning efforts and competition. Among other things, protective material was also shipped over the Easter weekend, says Per Follin.
“Stay at home”
Malin grape, head of the Public Health Authority’s Antibiotics and Health Care Unit, says it’s important for employers to keep their staff at home with the fewest symptoms.
They are now conducting in-depth interviews with business managers in a couple of select homes.
– There is a lot of knowledge about how to prevent drip and contact infections in healthcare. It is extremely important that staff have no symptoms, not even mild symptoms. Here, the employer has a very important role, she says.
– It is important for staff to feel that it is okay to stay home, that there are enough staff on site. The role of the employer is very important.
