EU countries buy the covid-19 vaccine together. Currently, the European Medicines Agency and the European Commission have approved three vaccines. The vaccine comes from the companies Pfizer Biontech, Moderna and Astra Zeneca.
Most doses of vaccine would come by Astra Zeneca. But the company has problems with manufacturing. Astra Zeneca said it would deliver around 100 million doses to the EU in April. Now they can only deliver 40 million doses. The European Commission believes that Astra Zeneca is violating the agreement, but Astra Zeneca does not agree.
It is still not known how good The Astra Zeneca vaccine protects the elderly. There are very few studies on this, says the European Medicines Agency. But more studies will come soon. The Swedish Public Health Agency will soon decide whether Sweden should use the Astra Zeneca vaccine in the elderly.
Today, the Pfizer Biontech company said that they will increase the production of your vaccine. The company says they will deliver more doses to the EU than they said before. It’s very good, says Swedish vaccine coordinator Richard Bergström. He believes that Sweden will reach the goal that all adults can be vaccinated before summer.
– I have seen more vaccines come to fruition and contracts are expanded and capabilities expanded. So I still think it’s realistic to achieve this goal, says Richard Bergström, who is the vaccine coordinator in Sweden.
Vaccination against covid-19 began at the end of December in Sweden. First, the elderly who live in nursing homes or receive home care, and staff who work near the elderly are vaccinated. Some health professionals have also started getting vaccinated. The next step is to vaccinate all people over 70 years of age, plus health personnel, people with disabilities who receive assistance and people who are in other risk groups. Finally, all other adults in the community should be vaccinated.
