Then the isolation of the elderly is broken

When the corona pandemic hit the world last winter, it was quickly seen that the virus was significantly more dangerous to the elderly than others. In Sweden, about 90 percent of those who died in covid-19 are 70 years or older.

Therefore, the Swedish Public Health Agency advises all people over the age of 70 to limit their close contacts and maintain a physical distance from people they do not live with.

As a result, many older people have become socially isolated. But now that the spread of the infection has been reduced to a low level, the Swedish Public Health Agency hopes to be able to ease restrictions for the elderly.

– We hope that in a couple of months or so, we can come up with a plan that reduces their isolation very significantly, says state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell in Aktuellt.

“A slightly more normal Christmas”

The goal is that the same recommendations apply regardless of age. In some settings, where you know other people closely, the elderly may be advised to wear mouth guards.

– We hope that, with this low spread of the infection that we have, and perhaps with some additional measures, we can land that even those in risk groups, over 70 and others, can live a life like anyone else in Sweden.

In Aktuellt, Anders Tegnell is asked if the elderly will be able to celebrate Christmas together with their children and grandchildren.

He responds that it relies on thinking carefully about the approach so that they can keep their distance from each other.

– Then I probably think it might be possible that we could celebrate a slightly more normal Christmas than we had thought.

Retirement homes will also continue to have special rules. The Swedish Public Health Agency has been commissioned to review, among other things, visiting unions, but has yet to reach a conclusion.
