The vegan sausage survived a vote in the European Parliament

The proposal to ban products that appear to contain meat, when in fact they are plant-based, has attracted a lot of attention ahead of Friday’s vote.

The purpose of the ban was to make it clear to consumers what the ingredients are in a product.

However, critics said it would be difficult for people to find alternatives to meat diets.

There is already a ban against calling vegan alternatives to dairy cheese or cream if they do not contain mammalian milk.

In Friday’s vote, however, the “vegan burger” survived, with 379 votes to 284.

– Now we can breathe a sigh of relief. I’m glad the rest of the European Parliament also thinks that this is a very stupid and bad idea, no matter what the French think, says Member of Parliament Fredrick Federley (C), who would rather spend time debating more competitiveness for farmers, and animal welfare.

The Green Party also welcomed the decision.

– I am very relieved that we in the European Parliament have put our foot in vegan sausage, of course vegan sausages should be called sausages! It is at the dining room table that citizens comply with EU policy and this is where we must start the green transition, says Pär Holmgren (MP) in a press release.

At the same time, he regrets that Parliament decided to support the proposal to prohibit the possibility of qualifying as “creamy” or “yoghurt-like” herbal alternatives to yoghurt or cream.

– Dairy lobbyists who want to stop the competition from soy and oat products can celebrate a victory. Those of us who want to make it easier to live climate-smartly have had a setback. But there is still the possibility in the next negotiations to stop this cure of stupid proposals, says Pär Holmgren
