The authorities affected include the Department of Finance and Commerce, as well as several other US agencies.
The United States Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) confirms that government networks have been attacked by hackers.
“Cisa offers the affected units technical support in relation to their work to identify and alleviate the things that have been compromised,” a Cisa spokesperson told AFP news agency.
According to the Washington Post, the cyberattack on authorities is related to last week’s attack on computer security company Fireeye, which is working to investigate how other companies have been hacked. The hackers came in the attack on Fireeye for tools the company uses to monitor the security of, among other things, authorities.
The illegal intrusions have been going on for several months and the FBI is investigating a group that works for the Russian intelligence service SVR, according to US media reports. The same group is said to have hacked into the United States government during the presidency of Barack Obama.
“The US government is aware of these reports and we are taking all necessary steps to identify and remedy any problems associated with this,” said John Ullyot, spokesman for the US National Security Council.
