– A new university in Mälardalen, with a much larger research resource, is a strategic investment to strengthen the development power of the region, but also to Sweden as a leading research nation, says Matilda Ernkrans.

The Mälardalen region has grown drastically in recent years and the University of Mälardalen is an important center for the growth of the region, according to the government.

– The region has long been industrial and commercial, but here there is no rust belt, on the contrary. Development and progress are taking place in Mälardalen, says Matilda Ernkrans.

She emphasizes that large, future-oriented companies are investing here, pointing to ABB, Volvo and Northvolt, among others.

The university too the university with the highest number of doctoral students and the most degree permits at the doctoral level, as well as a high proportion of external funding for research.

– This is a positive message, for the university, for the region and for Swedish research, says Matilda Ernkrans.

In order for the university to make the required transition, the university will receive an additional 130 million starting in 2022.

– We see that we are ready to become a university. We have strong research and will make sure we have what it takes to become a university by 2022, says Paul Pettersson, Rector of the University of Mälardalen.
