US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in Greece hoping to contribute to relaxation in the eastern Mediterranean. Recently, tensions between the NATO countries, Greece and Turkey, have intensified due to disagreements over demarcations and gas deposits at sea.

Pompeo began his two-day visit by meeting his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias in Thessaloniki. Neither of them made a statement after the meeting. On Tuesday, Pompeo will go to the island of Crete.

Ahead of the trip, a senior US official said Washington DC is ready to reduce tensions, reduce the likelihood of “accidents or incidents” and that Greece and Turkey will reach an agreement.

“We look forward to a productive visit,” Pompeo wrote on Twitter.

European countries have expressed concern about the escalation of the tense situation. But last week, Athens and Ankara said they were ready to start talks.
