On Tuesday, the United States imposed sanctions on Russia in response to the attempted assassination and imprisonment of Russian opposition politician and regime critic Alexei Navalny.
The sanctions are aimed at seven Russian officials, at the intermediate and upper levels, who were identified as directly involved in the poisoning of Navalny with the Russian neurotoxin novitjok, reports AP.
At the same time, the United States announced sanctions against more than a dozen Russian companies that were singled out for manufacturing biological and chemical weapons.
The EU also chose to increase its sanctions against Russia on Tuesday.
Navalny was recently sentenced to two years in prison for failing to inform his supervisor in the context of a suspended sentence; the fact of the matter was that Navalny was in a coma as a result of a poison attack in August 2020.
Russia responds: “Think about”
Now, the Russian government is fighting back in a statement. They believe that Western sanctions will not affect Russia.
– Those who continue to trust this type of initiative should think; Do they achieve their goals through such actions? Says Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, according to AFP.
-The answer is obviously clear, they do not reach their goals, he continues.
