The twist: Sun Yang’s suspension lifted after racist tweets

The eight-year doping ban against swimmer Sun Yang, one of China’s top athletes, was abruptly lifted on Wednesday. The unusual decision means the Chinese star is free to compete until his case is heard again.

Refused to provide samples

Yang was shut down in February after an unannounced home visit from Wada (World Anti-Doping Agency) in which the three-time Olympic champion refused to hand over blood and urine samples.

The International Swimming Federation (Fina) decided to settle for a warning to Sun Yang, but the case ended with Cas (the Supreme Court of Sports) who later a long negotiation fraught with interpretation problems He was sentenced to eight years’ suspension.

Racist Tweets

Now, however, Yang’s legal team has found a series of tweets from one of the three members of Cas’s panel that overturns the verdict. During a tirade of tweets about animal cruelty in China, former Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini has spoken out against the Chinese on several occasions and on at least one occasion printed racist accusations against the Chinese.

Now, new negotiations at Cas are waiting for Sun Yang, whether any decision is made before the postponed Olympics in Tokyo 2021 is still unclear.

The decision to reconsider comes just days after another TAS panel significantly eased sanctions against Russia for many years of organized doping in the country.
