An elementary school in Sollentuna north of Stockholm would become an international profile. When the 300 children returned after summer break, all the teachers spoke only English, writes Dagens Nyheter.
– It feels like they are using our children in an experiment, says a mother of an eleven-year-old at school.
Two years ago the school was bought by the large Norwegian independent school group Dibber, which runs 14 schools and around 70 preschools in Sweden.
Parents were informed in February that Sollentunaskolan was expected to have an international profile in the fall to attract new groups of students.
Parents thought there would be a gradual transition to English, but instead completely new teachers were hired from abroad who only spoke English. The following describes that children have great learning difficulties.
The school also had no permission to teach in English when teaching began.
School principal Sara Lundberg tells Dagens Nyheter that it is unfortunate that it has become difficult for the children in the first few weeks and that while the situation at school is expected to improve, staff have been sent to support or interpret the lessons.
