Thomas Szendrö is a secondary school teacher at Eriksbergsskolan Special Primary School in Uppsala, where the spread of the infection among teachers has increased in recent weeks.
A third have confirmed covid-19 and several are at home awaiting test results, something Upsala Nya Tidning was the first to report on.
– It is with the heart in the mouth of the throat that you enter and exhale a little when you walk from there. There is a distinct existence related to anxiety throughout the day, he says when Expressen calls.
– I am no longer a purung, I am 63 years old, and it is such a deceptive virus, you don’t know how this hits.
Two of Thomas Szendrö’s close friends passed away from covid in the spring.
– I know how bad it can be. I don’t know what I’m dealing with if I get an infection, he says.
“Unsustainable situation”
Yesterday, Education Minister Anna Ekström made the decision that schools and upper secondary schools will not be closed. Upper secondary schools will have greater opportunities for distance education, but not primary schools.
At the Eriksbergsskolan special primary school, the situation is now untenable, says Thomas. In one class, nine out of 16 staff members are at home.
– Can you imagine what work situation is for those who now stay on the ground. The remaining staff are tearing themselves apart, he says.
Teacher: We have to close
Thomas Szendrö highlights the support they receive from the closest coaches, describing the director as “fantastic but short of wings” as she cannot decide to close.
– There is only one situation now and that is to close for two or three weeks for this to end.
– It’s not my job to decide the closure, but I can only say that “we are already there”.
