Now the southern part of the Gothenburg archipelago will be re-measured for the first time in 70 years, reports SVT Väst. Measurements were previously made in the 1950s and 1800s, but now is the time for new methods and instruments. Perhaps new waterways can be found and traffic in the archipelago safer.
– We do not expect to find new foundations, they have already been completed, but we may update existing foundations which can be deeper with the help of our modern sonar. This may mean that we find new and safer roads for modern ships that are heavier and faster than the ships of a few years ago, says Mårten Hörlin, captain of SVT’s maritime research vessel Anders Bure.
The measurement project has been commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration and will run for three years in collaboration with Linköping University and the Swedish Road and Transport Research Institute.
