The threat from the radical nationalist milieu to the residents of Gothenburg must be mapped. At the same time, the social resources committee will propose measures to protect Gothenburg residents who are at risk of being exposed to threats or violence. This was decided by the municipal board on Wednesday.
– It’s often about how lonely young people are radicalized behind computers. We want to see what the image of the threat looks like and what protection may be needed, says City Councilor Jonas Attenius (S).
S took the initiative of the proposal, which was also joined by the alliance, V and MP. They believe that the city must be prepared to face threats and protect the people of Gothenburg.
– We are receiving signs that the threat is radically increasing. So it’s good if we have the foresight to follow the situation in Gothenburg, says City Councilor Elisabet Lann (KD).
The background is the description of the situation made by the Swedish National Defense College, which analyzed how the impact and threats to the democratic society of right-wing extremism are seen in Sweden and how the attacks are directed at political dissidents, people of origin foreigners, Muslims, Jews and LGBTQ people.
Internet-based culture of hatred can trigger acts of violence
It describes how the Internet-based culture of hatred can unleash new acts of violence inspired by white power against minorities.
– This is a new environment, which has not been talked about much before, says Jonas Attenius.
Magnus Ranstorp, an associate professor at the Swedish National Defense College and one of the authors behind the report, had previously told GP that there will be more terrorist attacks influenced by white power in Sweden.
– The radical nationalist environment spreads a narrative that makes people think very in black and white, and slides towards more extreme thoughts about their peers and minorities.
– Suddenly you have someone who is activated and decides to do something and of course it is very difficult for the Säpo to discover these people.

The threats of Islamist extremism
The proposal was approved by a large majority. But SD also wanted to see a current analysis of the threat landscape between different ethnic and religious groups in Gothenburg and wonders if it is in line with the city’s gender equality and diversity policy to investigate a single threat category.
– It is looking at the navel, you have to include all the conflicts if we want to get to the bottom of this. Having time for about 20 skinheads is comforting and we will. But there are many other groups that are at least as violent and extreme. It’s important to communicate with everyone, says city councilor Jörgen Fogelklou (SD).
Democrats are on the same path and wanted to include the Islamist and pro-violence autonomous milieu in the poll because they also pose a threat to democracy.
– I’m surprised the original claim was not complete, says City Councilor Martin Wannholt (D).
“Passed under the radar”
Elisabeth Lann (KD) says there is nothing to say that it is not possible to look at this another time.
– There have been reports that this threat is increasing and has gone unnoticed when the focus has been elsewhere. It often improves if refined, so there may be reasons to return to other threats to democracy, she says.
Karin Pleijel is a municipal councilor for MP.
– We know that, for example, LGBTQ people are constantly harassed and that individual people can cause great harm. This group has received very little attention in its search for violent extremists.
