The baby is Imfolozi’s sixth and now both are fine after a dramatic birth: Amadi got stuck in the birth canal and had to be taken out by the vets and zookeepers. He was a bit puzzled at first, but he soon recovered and started breastfeeding as he should, says Linda Berggren, Kolmården’s animal manager in a press release.
“Today he is active, he moves a lot and he has already started playing with his mother,” he says.
Kolmården has posted a video on Facebook where Amadi takes amazing steps on the grass.
The mother breastfeeds for two years.
Rhinos are pregnant for 16 months. Their young, or calves, are born without horns. However, a little horn is usually seen on the nose after just a week.
The calf stays with its mother for several years and already weighs about 500 kilos a year and a half. Sucks until he is a little over two years old.
The Kolmården rhinos are hardy rhinos and are part of an international conservation program. The park also cooperates with parks in Africa, including the Matopo National Park in Zimbabwe, to protect wildlife, according to the press release. The animals are primarily threatened by poaching because the rhino horn is believed to cure disease.
