From the tough war in the courtroom to the reconciliation between father and daughter on the sofa in the royal room. The drama of the Belgian royal family continues.
Princess Delphine’s journey to the Belgian royal family has been long, stormy and fraught with conflict. Then came the inauguration when King Philip invited her to the castle two weeks ago. And now comes the next turning point in this seven-year drama.
Recently, this “shocking image” landed on the editorial board: Princess Delphine along with the father who fought her for years. And next to her sits Queen Paola, who was deceived by the king during her eighteen-year relationship with Princess Delphine’s mother, Sibylle.
The venue is the private living room of King Albert and Queen Paola in the Belvédère castle in Laeken, just outside Brussels, and it is the Belgian court that has released the picture, perhaps to show a royal family that has finally started to heal after years of divisive conflict.
Although the question is whether this new family constellation is completely on target. It seems a bit fought and Queen Paola holds the bag in front of her like a protective shield.
After the affair of infidelity: Delphine is the new Belgian princess
Delphine is thus the result of an extramarital affair between the former King Albert and the Belgian noblewoman Sybille de Selys Longchamps. An infidelity that began in 1966 and lasted until 1984.
– It was a great moment. Delphine was a beloved child. Albert was not a father figure, but he was very kind to her, said Sybille of Selys Longchamps in a Belgian television documentary in 2013.

Despite this, it took Delphine seven years to be recognized as Albert’s daughter. Only after King Albert abdicated in 2013 and thus lost his criminal immunity was he able to be forced to undergo a DNA test in 2019, after a lengthy legal process. And so Princess Delphine got her title of princess.
In a joint statement released in early October, she and her brother, King Philip, said:
– Last Friday we met for the first time, here at Laeken castle. It was a warm meeting. And our long and meaningful discussion gave us the opportunity to get to know each other. We talk about our lives and about areas that we are both interested in. From now on, this bond will be strengthened within the family.
