On September 26, a bridge appeared in a shallow bay in Styrsö. It later turned out that the great shark, which is the second largest fish species in the world, had run aground.
An eight meter long bridge has been found dead in the Gothenburg archipelago, outside Vrångö, and everything indicates that it is the same bridge, and an autopsy was performed yesterday.
– We take various samples, skin samples, muscle samples and liver samples. The liver of this type of shark is gigantic, almost a quarter of the insides of the entire shark, so it can be suspected that it may have died due to environmental toxins, but we do not know, says Björn Källström of the marine biology laboratory from Gothenburg.
The stomach was completely empty
The bridge, which is the second largest fish in the world and belongs to the shark species, can grow up to 13 meters long and weigh 7 tons. It is believed to have a lifespan of 50 years and is a plankton eater and takes long walks at depths of 200-1000 meters. A possible growing problem with them is plastic in the stomach, something that has also been found among whales.
– But the stomach was completely empty, says Björn Källström. So far it is a mystery. We just don’t know. And I doubt we ever know what he died of, says Björn Källström.
Can stay
A private individual must have found the bride last Sunday in the water outside Vrångö, where she can now remain. It lay dead in shallow water, at a depth of one meter. To do a more accurate autopsy, it would have to be brought ashore. But due to the size of the shark, this was judged to be too big a job.
