The Södersjukhuset medical staff is very critical of the Stockholm region after the Christmas weekend.

Intensive care is heavily used, admits Stockholm’s director of health and medical care, Björn Eriksson.

87 people with covid-19 are being cared for in the intensive care unit in Stockholm on Monday morning, he says.

– The pressure hasn’t changed since before Christmas. Normally we have 90 seats in VAT. Now we have doubled the number, he states and explains that the same number of places are used for patients without covid-19.

No reduction

The health service has been difficult for several weeks; believes that the situation in vat is extremely critical. This is the part of care where the most staff is needed.

– We do not see any reduction in the spread of infection. We therefore hope that it will continue like this.

Despite this, Björn Eriksson believes that the situation is under control. The region has increased the number of VAT places to have the highest possible margin.

– All those who need intensive care should receive it, emphasizes and emphasizes that the region does not compromise on quality.

The region does everything possible to make things easier for the care staff, he says.

– We accept all the help we can get from other care providers in the region.

“The curves point up”

The Västra Götaland region is also in a difficult situation at the moment, and a crisis situation agreement has been granted that allows working time rules for care staff to be taken out of play. In practice, this means longer work shifts but more pay.

In the region, 80 percent of the total number of IVA slots are occupied, says Health and Medical Care Director Ann Söderström. Like Eriksson, he testifies that the pressure on IVA sites is unusually high, even among non-covid-19 patients.

– We expect the occupation to increase even more. We have seen an increase over the weekend, the curves point up.

The situation is tense, but the situation is under control, even though it now requires a lot of staff, according to her.

– In several hospitals, we are on the border. Therefore, we have requested and also been granted that we can activate a crisis agreement for individual staff groups if necessary, says Söderström.

“Do everything we can”

The crisis agreement that was activated before Christmas has not been implemented by any hospital in Stockholm, according to Björn Eriksson.

– It is approved by SKR (Swedish municipalities and regions, editor’s note) but there is no hospital that has used it yet.

– At the same time, it puts more effort on our employees. We have to do it in balance to be able to withstand the entire pandemic.

Intensive care nurse Charlotta Dickman testifies that several of her colleagues have panicked and feel bad, that they are forced to work until they “break down and collapse.” Eriksson claims that it is a consequence of a historically difficult situation.

– No one has had so many patients at the same time. It is obvious that we cannot be equipped for that.

– We, like everyone in the health sector, do everything possible to deal with this situation, he adds.
