Unemployment has risen dramatically in Skåne and now the region is investing heavily in education and skills development to meet the need.
– It is a very fragile situation and what worries us the most is unemployment, we see that it is likely to continue to rise in 2021, says Ulrika Geeraedts, director of development in the Skåne Region, during today’s press conference.
The Skåne region is concerned about the increase in the unemployment rate. At the same time, it is believed that there are fewer notices and bankruptcies in the region than expected.
– In the last few days, we have heard figures about notices and layoffs in Sweden, where we can say that Skåne has not been affected to the level that Stockholm and the Västra Götaland region have, we have been in 5,500 notices while Sthlm has reached 48,000 notice.
Ulrika Geeraedts also notes that bankruptcies that were seen to increase this spring have not continued to the same extent.
– We see some improvement but it is a very fragile situation and what worries us most is unemployment, we see that it will continue to increase in 2021, said Ulrika Geeraedts.

Youth unemployment in particular stands out as an example where there is a risk that high levels of unemployment will last. That is why the region invests in education and skills development. The government’s fall budget also received support to create approximately 2,400 more places at universities and colleges in the region. The University of Lund will have 1,380 study places, the University of Malmö 704 and the University of Kristianstad 335.
“Skåne is a region of contrasts”
The region highlighted during a press conference that it continues the business emergency that was established this spring, where companies can turn for tips and advice during the pandemic. An educational emergency has also started to link companies with companies that lay off with those looking for workforce. It will continue to develop, says Ulrika Geeraedts, who highlights education as an important part of recovery.
– If you look at Skåne, it is a region of contrasts, both with a large proportion of people with a high educational level and a very large proportion with a low educational level. We see that improving the skills supply is the most important success factor in solving our unemployment, Ulrika Geeraedts said during the press conference.
– For this reason, we have started a series of trainings that focus on areas of scarcity where we know that there are a large number of entrepreneurs looking for labor and where the educational period is short.
These include roofing education, sheet metal education, care attendant education, and education for real estate educators that have been started to meet the need and reduce unemployment.
The city of Malmö is also investing in education, awarding a one million grant on Wednesday to various associations that help the unemployed find work and education.
