A visit to Prime Minister Stefan Löfven’s store in the middle of Christmas shopping has led to the resignation of health workers.

Health professionals tell Aftonbladet they fear that the behavior of the politicians revealed will diminish confidence in the Swedish strategy.

– It feels as if we caregivers are left to our own destiny, says Johan Sand, Karolinska’s covid-iva nurse to Aftonbladet.

The government has repeated its message over and over again during the second corona wave. Everyone must take responsibility for stopping the spread of infection. Before the Christmas holidays, the instructions were clear: Swedes would not be overcrowded at Christmas shopping, nor would they go on sale at noon this year.

Despite this, several ministers have ignored their own exhortations. Prime Minister Stefan Löfven has been seen on various matters before Christmas, Justice Minister Morgan Johansson was seen buying appliances at the noon sale and Finance Minister Magdalena was on a ski vacation in Sälen.

“Another who doesn’t care”

When Aftonbladet calls the health staff, they all describe the same thing: a feeling of frustration and despair. And let no one take your alarm seriously.

– They shrugged. He thought “well another who doesn’t care.” One can only draw a deep sigh. It feels like we are left to our own destiny. And also to patients who become seriously ill.

Stefan Löfven’s press secretary has explained the prime minister’s excursions into trade, when, among other things, he was looking for a spare part for a razor, saying that they were planned and made in accordance with current recommendations.

– Was there something that was necessary to get food to survive or medicines that I would have? If someone had been photographed in an emergency pharmacy, they would not say anything about it, but it does not appear to have been the case, says Johan Sand.

“They are the opposite of role models”

Medical care in the country is under great pressure. Several regions have introduced crisis management agreements and healthcare personnel are now forced to work overtime to be able to care for the large number of covid patients. That the main politicians of the country in this situation do not follow the advice and the restrictions is serious, he says.

– Covid-iva is almost completely reserved, each patient who is discharged is replaced by someone new who needs intensive care. Being a minister and shopping now is the opposite of being a role model, says Johan Sand.

Several nurses and nursing assistants Aftonbladet speaks with believe that the ministers’ actions risk undermining confidence in the Swedish strategy.

The nurse: a hypocrisy

Johanna Kronkvist, 27, a nurse at the Covidac emergency room at Östra Sjukhuset in Gothenburg, calls the actions of the politicians hypocritical.

– People see that people in positions of power, who decide if the recommendations do not follow them, then why should the Swedish population? It will end with more sick people, greater burdens on health care and more deaths, she says.

He understands that everyone can make mistakes, but believes that the politicians who decide the country’s crown strategy have higher demands on themselves than on others.

– As a health care worker, I haven’t been in business since the pandemic started, except at the grocery store. Ministers have at least the same responsibility as we do in the health field, says Johanna Kronkvist.

Risks of good political contempt

The fact that ministers take Christmas trips to shopping malls and the mountains in the midst of the pandemic also damages confidence in politics. That’s the opinion of Sofia Lindström, a nurse at Uppsala University Hospital.

– The risk is that we lose confidence in politicians and that generates a general contempt for politicians. We cannot afford that at the moment, we need stability and we must feel safe from those who lead, she says, but points out that she herself feels confident in politicians.

Care staff are now concerned about the situation in the health system in a few weeks, when people who were infected during the Christmas holidays will start seeking care.

– We can only hope that even more have followed the restrictions in the last week. But none of us expect the pressure on healthcare to ease in the near future, says Johan Sand.
