“We should close the partnership early”

The strategy of the Swedish crown is a disaster that has cost many lives unnecessarily.
That’s the opinion of Professor Andrew Ewing, who wrote a long article in Time magazine.
– I am sincerely concerned that countries are now adopting the Swedish model, he tells Aftonbladet.
Andrew Ewing is Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Gothenburg and a Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. In an article in the American magazine Time, he warns other countries to follow the Swedish model.
He lists several worrying signs that the spread of the infection is increasing in Sweden, and notes that our country ranks alarmingly high in death statistics.
Ewing’s main criticism is that the Swedish strategy is starting to be accepted as a solution around the world.
– So many people have died unnecessarily because of the mistakes we have made. Mistakes have to be acknowledged so we can move on, he says.

Conservative inspired group
As an example of how the Swedish strategy is gaining ground, he mentions an American research initiative called the “Great Barrington Declaration.” They advocate herd immunity and praise the Swedish strategy. The initiative has been well received by the White House, according to the New York Times.
– I’m very worried about this. It is a group of conservative economists who want to lock up everyone over 60 and let the virus run through the rest of the population. This is not how you can achieve herd immunity, it is done through vaccines, says Andrew Ewing.
He continues:
– Now we only have about 10 percent immunity in Sweden, despite all the deaths, can you imagine what it would be like if we had 60 percent herd immunity?

Criticism of Tegnell
Andrew Ewing has previously criticized the Swedish strategy, belongs to the group that wrote several discussion articles under the name “22 researchers”.
He criticizes the fact that Sweden did not close the partnership at an early stage. He also criticizes the fact that the Swedish Public Health Agency rejected the presymptomatic infection and that the agency does not urge the public to wear mouth guards.

Ewing also criticizes state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell and his representative Johan Giesecke. According to the professor, both commercialize the Swedish strategy in an uncritical way.
– Tegnell has almost become an icon and it is very dangerous for a country to make decisions for him. I don’t understand how he handles his job when he spends so much time being an icon and marketing himself. Frode Forland in Norway doesn’t spend much time on such things; He is concentrating on his job, curbing the pandemic.
You are a chemistry professor, does the corona pandemic really belong to your field of research?
– Not officially. I am a biochemist but as a researcher I have worked with brain chemistry, cells and things related to viruses and bacteria. But this is not rocket science. It’s about conducting a thorough investigation.
The Public Health Agency declined to comment on Ewing’s criticism.
