– I felt like I wasn’t getting any support. I was working maybe 120-130 hours a week because there were no people. It felt like they put everything on the staff that was on the floor, so to speak.
Johan says that at first they received very contradictory advice on whether or not they should have protective equipment when they came to the infected, it depended on which nurse was on duty. Although he is new to the job himself, he became responsible for showing alternates how to treat the infected in the accommodation.
– The people who came and worked as substitutes did not even know that there was contagion when they entered and worked, we had people who came to work but entered out of fear.
The Vision union which organizes managers in the care of the elderly indicates that the conditions for them have been irrational, with great responsibility in the work environment. Kommunal president Tobias Baudin believes a major problem for staff has been that employers have done it differently.
– There are those who are great and do their best and then there are those who are very lax when the staff sounds the alarm and you see it as a threat. And then your review shows how it is missing locally, it looks so different.
He now hopes that the government-appointed Crown Commission will prove that Sweden has failed in terms of care for the elderly. In the long run, she also believes that this debate that has come out can lead to better care for the elderly.
– Now everyone talks about caring for the elderly. And the pandemic has helped, but it’s sad that it takes so many thousands of deaths before people start talking seriously about caring for the elderly.
