Just before lunch, Gothenburg FC made a surprising decision, to say the least: the elite business is closed.
– We received the information in a conference call. We are very shocked and sad and confused and we do not know anything about what is going to happen, National team star Elin Rubensson told SVT Sport.
According to Gothenburg FC president Peter Bronsman, it is “good for Swedish and Gothenburg women’s football in the long run.” For SVT Sport, it develops even further.
– The spirit was simple in 2003. There were no exclusively Swedish women’s teams in Gothenburg, the men’s team had no women’s activities. Then we started together with the politicians in Gothenburg. It was to create interest in young girls. Elite teams were needed for them to create idols, he says and continues:
– We have done it very well. It was 18 years ago, it wasn’t the day before yesterday. The years go by very quickly and by the end of 2020, the Swedish men’s teams in Gothenburg now have women’s teams. We think it’s cool. We believe that the women’s team should be within the men’s clubs to be fair to the girls. A club should include both ladies and gentlemen.
No player received information
On December 17, the Gothenburg FC board decided to shut down elite operations. A few days later, Peter Bronsman had a meeting with the players council.
– When you have a meeting with the players council, they go up some points. It was not a discussion meeting, it was points of view that they wanted to present to me. It had nothing to do with this, says Bronsman.
But didn’t you think you needed to talk about the closure even though it was already decided?
– That’s not how it works. Players have contracts and that is what we value. What is said in different meetings can always be discussed: what is right or what is wrong. We have been as open as possible. We have held on to things until we know if the decisions we make are completely correct. Now we are absolutely sure that it is the right decision.
So you didn’t meet with any players about this?
– On a subject like this, we never have it.
“It’s a board problem”
Why not?
– It’s a board problem.
The decision was made on December 17. It was the day after Gothenburg left the Champions League following the loss to Manchester City.
– All the decisions you make in an association depend on something. It could be due to many things, but the loss to City was not decisive.
But was he contributing?
– It certainly was, but there are many things that are. You want to make decisions that are good for the future. We love women’s football well.
