The phenomenon of Halo light over Stockholm: “Magical”

The phenomenon of light seen in the sky is called a halo, like the English word for halo. On Sunday, Expressen received several images showing the beautiful spectacle in the sky.

Stina Andersson and her friend Emilie Larsson were sitting and eating Sunday brunch at their home in Vårberg in Stockholm when they saw halons.

– We look at the sun and think “oh, how nice with the sun”. Then we saw it. Emilie just laughed, says Stina Andersson, who says they looked like three suns in the sky.

Then they began to Google what it could be and realized that it was a halo that they saw in front of them.

Thus arises a halo in the sky

Halo is a meteorological phenomenon that appears relatively frequently in the sky. But the conditions must be right to see it clearly.

In Stockholm on Sunday morning it was about ten degrees below zero and bright sunshine. Then the sun’s rays are refracted against the ice crystals and halons are formed, much closer to the ground than in other seasons.

– This guy is visible from the fact that it is very cold. It is the cold in combination with open waterways and ice crystals that flutter in the air, says Johan Groth, a meteorologist at the StormGeo meteorological institute, and continues:

– The weather situation as it is now was the weather we had in the Stockholm area, so long ago we had the opportunity to see such beautiful things here. Further north, it’s probably not particularly unusual.

“Go out into nature and enjoy”

Stina Andersson and Emilie Andersson have traveled together in more than 20 countries in recent years and think it was fun to watch the phenomenon and experience an adrenaline rush at home.

The rest of the day the friends will spend outside in the winter weather.

– We will go out into nature and enjoy ourselves, possibly skating if we find a washed ice hockey rink, says Stina Andersson.
