In the morning, a person with a knife attacked several people in front of the former premises of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in the 11th arrondissement of eastern Paris.

“This is clearly an Islamist terrorist attack,” said French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.

The Interior Minister also says that it is a “new bloody attack on our country” and points out that the incident took place at the site of the attack on the satirical magazine that in January 2015 claimed twelve lives.

– This is how Islamist terrorists act.

Journalists on smoke break

The AFP news agency refers to legal sources and reports that at least five people have been arrested as a result of the attack.

According to the country’s prime minister, Jean Castex, who visited the crime scene during the day, the injured are two journalists who at the time of the attack took a smoke break outside the building. The conditions of the victims are serious but not life-threatening, according to Castex.

Castex also stated that the attack took place in a symbolic place and time, as the trial of the 2015 act against Charlie Hebdo is currently taking place in Paris.

Prosecutors announced at the same time that Friday’s attack will be investigated as a terrorist crime based on the time and place of the event.

Paul Moreira, a journalist for Le Parisien, witnessed the incident when he was on the scene at the Premières lignes production company.

– A short man, quite seated, attacked people under our facilities with a butcher knife, Moreira tells Le Parisien.

French media report that the alleged perpetrator was arrested on the steps of the Bastille Opera, several blocks south of the twelfth district. According to unconfirmed information, he had traces of blood on his clothes.
