Milton Kärrlander, 27, has autism and Down syndrome and needs 24/7 assistance.
Now her daily activities are closed and her mother Piret is forced to take a vacation to care for her son.
– No one knows how to do it. I don’t know what to do, she says.
A couple of weeks ago, Piret Bergholtz was told that daily activities in the Värmdö municipality would be closed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Then he saw no other way than to call his boss and take a vacation.
– I think it’s horrible. Not only can you close a business, but there are guidelines for what applies and the compensation it receives, says Piret.
Her son Milton Kärrlander, 27, lives at home and has autism and Down syndrome. Every day, parents act as assistants in the afternoons and evenings.
Milton is very sensitive to change. Hiring outside assistants when daily operations are closed is not an alternative.
– We’ve tried before and it was a disaster. We can’t bring people in from outside in such a short time, ”she says.
“You lose a lot of income”
The urgent solution has been for Piret to stay home from work to support his son. She has requested extended hours of assistance but has not yet made a decision.

– My vacation days were soon over. Then I have to take time off and lose a lot of income. It feels horrible, she says.
The pirate has turned to the municipality, Försäkringskassan, lawyers, aid companies and local politicians. Until now, no one has been able to provide answers on how to solve the problem.
– Nobody knows. I do not know what to do. Also, my son needs help with everything related to him and it is very exhausting to be the only one responsible throughout the day, ”she says.
“You can have terrible outbursts of anger”
The municipality agreed to let Milton visit daily operations 2.5 days a week along with some other users. So it should be in a secluded room, a solution that Piret doesn’t think is sustainable.
– It’s weird for my son. He can have terrible outbursts of anger, she says.
Päivi Suomivirta, Head of Department of the Office of Health and Care in the Municipality of Värmdö, writes in an email to Aftonbladet: “We try to find individual solutions with staff based on accommodation”.
According to Päivi Suomivirta, help managers and staff from daily activities are available for dialogue. But the municipality has no supervision at home.
“Based on the recommendations given, we have seen no alternative but to personalize the business individually and the goal is for everyone to be offered some type of activity / meeting request each week,” he writes.
The pirate discovers that people with functional variations end up in the cloud in the coronavirus pandemic.
I’m bothering myself. It is incredibly annoying not to hear the voices of these people. After all, they cannot fight for their rights on their own, so parents must be able to cope. There should be a plan for how people covered by LSS should be cared for in these circumstances. I think it is terrible to do this, “she says.
