Jonas Gardell criticizes the government and demands an end date for the 50-person rule.
This prompted nurse Sofia Cervin to react and invite the comedian for a study visit to the intensive care unit.
Faced with the threat of a new corona wave, he bears witness to an entire profession on his knees, far from recovering.
“Who will take care of you and everyone else if Covid 19 lights up and assumes the same proportions as before,” he asks Gardell.
The doors open and the patient enters.
The doors open and the patient enters.
The doors open and the patient enters.
The film, which is repeated in the head of nurse Sofia Cervin, is not a nightmare. It’s a memory picture of the spring of 2020, when the flow of new terminally ill patients never slowed. As an intensive care nurse at Karolinska in Solna and Huddinge, I was at the forefront when Sweden ducked under COVID-19.
In March, April and May, Sofia worked the equivalent of 300 percent, under the worst circumstances experienced by Swedish medical care.

In the few moments when Sofia was free, she was still working, in mind and in every sense of the body, she says.
– It was impossible to relax. I was just waiting for work to call and say: you have to come in.
Now the number of infections is increasing again at a worrying rate in Sweden. Faced with the threat of a new corona wave, the question is inevitable: will it be able to do it again?
The answer is no. The spring flattened the energy level layer by layer until it was below zero. There is.
– We are still totally exhausted, many experienced colleagues have chosen to resign, the power that existed in medical care at that time is completely gone. We can handle a moderate increase, but never a situation like the one we had last spring.

Sofia Cervin responded to Jonas Gardell’s attack on the government.
Wrote to Gardell
In Thursday’s Expressen, author and comedian Jonas Gardell attacked the government, which cannot say when to ease restrictions on attendance at public meetings of 50 to 500 people.
“From now on, do we have to close all theaters and cinemas every time there is a new flu? Influenza also means death among the elderly. Sometimes with a higher proportion of deaths than covid-19”, Gardell wrote, among other things.
Sofia Cervin reacted to the comedian’s text and chose to respond to his Facebook page.
“Welcome to a study visit to my work at Iva in Karolinska. There we are a profession that is completely finished. We just went through the worst of what we’ve been through. We can’t do it again! Who will take care of you and everyone else if Covid 19 flares up and assumes the same proportions as in the spring?, writes Sofia.
– I fully understand that cultural workers in Sweden and the world are going through a very difficult time economically, but I compare it with the risk that we will end up again in the same situation as last spring, we will not be able to do it.
To Jonas Gardell, Sofia writes:
“We must all understand together that our society is not capable of pressing the snooze button. We will not applaud Covid 19 on stage again, there will be no encore here.”

“It was over”
Sofia herself does not want to speak in terms of war, but her description of the situation in Sweden’s most prestigious clinic is scenes from a field hospital under the utmost scrutiny. New terminally ill and dying patients. Hour by hour, day by day. Months passed.
– Everything is over. We did not know what to put patients to bed the next day. All forms of medical equipment disappeared, infusion pumps disappeared, everything.
This Easter, the staff lacked their own protective gear. Sofia herself advertised on Facebook if someone had a protective mask that she could borrow.
– Once it was so bad that colleagues were not allowed to leave the apartment because there were no new protective clothing to change into when they came back.
Covid spring is the worst period of life. He is still constantly in the thoughts of Sofia, but he still finds it difficult to draw outlines of individual memories. The images melt into a feeling of helplessness. You never want to experience it again.
– I have colleagues who feel panic anxiety simply by putting on protective gear because they return to the same stress level as then.
Died alone
Sofia has experience. It is used to save lives, but also to see people beyond rescue.
– Caring for families and patients in this phase of life is part of our job and we do it relatively frequently on a daily basis.
This spring, there were no relatives present. At best, they had to settle for a brief update over the phone in the morning and in the evening. Some patients who died did so alone.
– Sometimes there was no one who could hold them in hand when they died, it was the worst thing to see. Even then we couldn’t stop, there was always a new patient.
Sofia Cervin is not the only one reacting to Gardell’s text. Many have left similar comments on their Facebook page. She was also criticized by Dagens Nyheter’s lead writer Amanda Sokolnicki, who asks where her solidarity is with healthcare staff.
“Must be able to plan”
Gardell responds to the criticism in an email to Aftonbladet:
“This is Crazy. I have never demanded that the theaters open immediately. If you have read my articles, I write that the theaters maybe should be closed all fall and I myself have suggested trying to open in late January or late February. I demand, however, is that we must have the opportunity to plan when we open, because once the message arrives, it will be at least six months before starting. In all my texts I have emphasized the seriousness of the situation and I myself have strictly followed all recommendations since the beginning of March ”.
