Voters vote in Houston, Texas.

The most important issue for voters in US elections is the economy, according to about a third of voters in a national polling station that CNN publishes even before the first polling stations closed. One in five believes that racial discrimination is more important and roughly the same proportion indicate that the coronavirus is the most important electoral issue.

Questions about crime and safety, as well as medical care, are set at the highest level for every ten voters.

More than half of voters say it is more important to limit the spread of the infection than to rebuild the economy.

In another poll conducted by Edison Research for Reuters, seven out of ten Americans say they decided before September who they would vote for in the presidential election.

Two out of ten say that the pandemic was the most important issue when deciding which presidential candidate to vote for, while three out of ten say that the economy weighs more.

Five out of ten consider it more important to limit the spread of the coronavirus, even if it damages the economy.
