In a prerecorded television speech, 42-year-old Virginia Raggi claims that the infamous Casamonica crime family has targeted her. According to the mayor, the reason is that he destroyed several illegally built villas in Rome that belonged to the family.
“They have informed us that they were planning an attack against me and my family,” Raggi said in the speech, according to Reuters.

Virginia Raggi adds that there are other mafia families that have made her an enemy. They stand out as the Spada family in the coastal city of Ostia and the Marando family in San Basilio in the eastern part of Rome.
Due to the threats, she is now forced to live with a police card.
“There are parts of Rome where people come to me and tell me to keep fighting, but then they leave because they are afraid of being seen by the clans,” he said in the speech, according to Reuters.
Virginia Raggi was elected as the first mayor of Rome in 2016. She represents the anti-establishment party Five Star Movement and is running for re-election this year.
