The message can come overnight

The spring semester largely meant home studies for high school students and country students.
When the infection situation has rapidly worsened, the same solution may become relevant again after the Christmas holidays.
– The pandemic does not take into account Christmas or other holidays, says Education Minister Anna Ekström (S).
In March, a large portion of the country’s high schools, colleges, universities and adult education exchanged studies at the school for distance education to reduce the spread of the infection. This is how it looked in many places until the semester ended in June.
When the fall semesters began, the schools reopened. Given that the spread of the infection has exploded in recent times, the weeks leading up to Christmas may be the last in a long time that pupils and students are in place.

Education Minister Anna Ekström (SocDem) notes that there are currently no concrete plans to close schools, but that the legislation that was implemented this spring can be used again.
– I want schools to be open, the more open the better. But it is a serious situation and we are prepared and there is an opportunity to close schools, he says.
The government’s decision can come quickly and take effect on short notice.
– It can happen overnight and take effect the next day, so it can go very fast, he says.
If a shutdown occurs, Anna Ekström sees several issues that can follow.
– Students lose knowledge, the risk is great that they will not learn as much. It’s bad for well-being, child abuse has increased, and many have gone wrong. Also, school meals are the only food that many people get, he says.

Celebration of Lucia different
With Lucia and school graduations a few weeks away, she urges everyone to be very careful. Not least in a school setting.
– The recommendations are not to have collections. We don’t want to see any Lucia trains with Grandma, Grandpa and Mom and Dad, he says.
Throughout the year, several teachers and preschool staff have testified about how difficult it can really be to distance themselves from their jobs and have expressed concern that not enough action is being taken.
– I’m impressed with how many people really do their best in a difficult situation. I really don’t want to hear about schools forcing teachers to sit in crowded staff meetings, he says.
Even during the Christmas holidays, ask for caution and reduced social interaction.
