The police film shows a group of men surrounding an intervening patrol.
The most threatening man has previously been convicted of murder and belongs to a well-known family with power in the Gothenburg underworld.
– If you touch me, you’ll come back, threaten the police.
The film from the police body camera is shocking and has provoked strong reactions. In moments, an intervention in Angered turns into a threatening situation.
When the police have to take over a motocross rider, a large group of young men rush to rescue him.
The incident occurred in April 2019. It is included as evidence in a preliminary investigation against a 33-year-old man belonging to a ruling family within parts of the criminal environment in Gothenburg. He is the one who makes the verbal threats against the police.
The group immediately makes it clear that they do not care about law enforcement, they urge the police to immediately release the driver of the crossed motorcycle. When the police hold their baton against the surrounding group, the 33-year-old is heard saying:
– Keep the cane or I’ll nail it.
The man refuses to speak
The man clasps his hands when the police ask him to back off. Threats continue:
– If you touch me, you’ll come back, I don’t care that you’re screwing the mob.
The situation calms down quickly, the police are reinforced by another patrol.
In a subsequent questioning with the police, the 33-year-old refuses to speak. He just says he denies the crime.
– This movie looks extreme, when you look at it, but it’s a typical everyday situation for police in the Northeast or another suburb, says author and former Aftonbladet employee Johanna Bäckström Lerneby, who wrote the book The Family. It reflects the family to which the 33-year-old suspect belongs.
– These are the same people who had barricades in Gothenburg just over a week ago to check who got in, what they think their areas are.
Imprisoned for assault
The suspect has previously been convicted of murder. When he was 20 years old, he murdered a young man who stabbed his little brother. He is currently serving another prison sentence for serious assault on a man and a woman outside a restaurant in Gothenburg.
According to the verdict, the 33-year-old man had to hit the woman twice in the face. The man fell to the ground and, according to a witness, kicked him in the head.
In the trial against the 33-year-old man, the main witness in the case was allowed to participate from a secret location for his safety.
Police Chief Erik Nord also says that Angered’s film describes a fairly everyday situation for police patrols in the particularly vulnerable areas of Gothenburg.
– I will not say that it happens every day, but it is not uncommon for our police officers to be exposed to this, especially if they patrol in pairs, which they usually do.
Tributes to the police
Erik Nord commends vulnerable police officers who, despite the threatening situation, remain calm and make sure the situation does not escalate.
– It takes a lot to be able to be calm in such a pressured situation.
Erik Nord confirms that they are the same people who recently set up private barricades in the northern suburbs of Gothenburg.
– One thing is that they go to the police, we have radio communication, we are armed and trained, but for an audience that ends up in a checkpoint, it is very unpleasant.
