Kaavan, left, extends his trunk and makes contact at the Kulen Prom Tep elephant reserve in Cambodia.
This is his first contact with another elephant in eight years.
With one smooth movement, he extended his proboscis through the white fence and retrieved a proboscis.
The Kaavan elephant, known as the loneliest elephant in the world, is no longer alone. He has now started his new life on the Kulen Prom Tep reserve in Cambodia, after being moved from a ruined zoo in Islamabad, Pakistan.
– Kaavan will finally have the chance to live a peaceful and species-appropriate life, says Martin Bauer, a spokesman for the Austrian organization that worked for months to prepare him for the flight.
The 36-year-old male was the only elephant at the Islamabad Zoo and a campaign was spread on social media and among the general public that he should have a new home. Support for Kaavan grew as world star Cher became involved in his cause. She also met him personally at Siem Reap airport on Monday.
The journey from Pakistan was not an easy task. Veterinarians provided Kaavan with 200 kilos of food to enjoy during the seven-hour flight aboard a Russian jumbo cargo flight. A system of pipes was installed in his cage to handle the more than 200 liters of urine that formed.
Once in his new home in the reserve, the male elephant will first visit a smaller enclosure and then will be released into a larger area with three female elephants.
– He has a very bright future, says Martin Bauer.
