The length director wants to remake the Tour de Ski: “I hope Fis thinks about it”

Johannes Hösflot Kläbo will be in charge of the World Cup competitions until at least New Years and Emil Iversen has announced that he will do the same and will also resign from the Tour de Ski.

The tour begins on New Years Day and is decided at three locations in the Alps. Swedish cross-country manager Daniel Fåhraeus wants to avoid traveling this season.

– Hopefully, Fis is seriously considering minimizing travel and reducing the risk of spreading infections. I really hope that a discussion takes place and that it is clarified as much as possible, he tells SVT Sport.

You mean, like, crackers and the like, huh?

– Yes, for example.

“The decision makes the matter even more interesting”

The Norwegian stars’ decision does not directly affect the Swedish cross country team, but it will be another parameter in the planning for the upcoming World Cup weekend in Davos, Switzerland, from December 12-13.

– I don’t know how the discussion in Norway has gone, but of course we reason internally and make an evaluation of Ruka. We make an assessment of how we should make it as safe as possible for our skiers and whether it will be off or not. We try to weigh the pros and cons, safety and take responsibility, says Fåhraeus and continues:

– Norway’s decision makes the matter even more interesting. Take one more turn and reason. In fact, it is like starting all over again. I think it will be like that between each competition. How is the resort? How does it look with the spread of the infection there? How is the trip? How does the organizer think?

“Is there room for improvement?”

Have you heard of a Swedish skier who doesn’t want to compete?

– I haven’t heard from the pilots. Not even a day has passed since we landed.

Are you happy with how it worked out on Ruka?

– I have spoken with Anders (Byström, national team manager) several times during the day and there is clearly room for improvement. There are a number of different details, from the dining room to how the training areas were structured. But based on how they handled the bubbles, Anders thought it worked well overall. I hope that the organizers share experiences with the next organizer so that they improve more and more, says the length director.

I have not decided on Davos

Actual travel to and from winter competition venues is an important factor from an infection point of view. Sweden has not made a decision regarding Davos.

– We had planned to bring our own plan, but it is not free. We have to think about how it would affect infections, but also about costs. There are tradeoffs all the time. It will be very complete for all of us who participate. It sucks our must and makes us learn while traveling.

Does it feel worth it?

– It’s a great question. If it turns out that no one got sick after Ruka, it’s easy to say it was worth it. But if it turns out that one, two or three got sick, that’s five more. It is human health that we are talking about and as “Pliggen” (Per Andersson, national team doctor) has said, it is not really known what impact it has on a skier where the heart and lungs are so incredibly important. It is with great caution that we must address the issue at all times.

What speaks of going to Davos is the desire to complete the World Cup, especially after the successful start in Ruka. But Fåhraeus is clear that there are some who are against it.

– It is the risk of infection. And the risk that we will get something wrong or miss something if it becomes infected. We really need to go through every imaginable scenario. If we feel safe with him, we will go, but if we don’t feel safe with him, it may be a decision that we not go.
