The Corona Commission released its biased report on elderly care Tuesday, pointing to a long list of shortcomings. Not least, the Commission points to the high proportion of temporary employment, which has led to a decline in skills and too many different contacts between users and staff. Conclusion: wide spread of infection in households and alarmingly high mortality rates.
The Left Party wants to act directly and will therefore raise an initiative in the Riksdag Finance Committee on Thursday. Proposal V is for approximately SEK 12 billion over three years in a state subsidy directed to municipalities for investments in personnel.
– The Crown Commission notes that one in four people in the care of the elderly works hourly. This means that they have to run around in many homes. They have difficulty taking sick leave and business continuity is impaired, says party leader Nooshi Dadgostar
Money must be paid gradually, with SEK 3 billion the first year and then SEK 4 billion and SEK 5 billion respectively. The amount of money each municipality receives depends on how many temporary jobs they have made permanent. To what extent the money is enough to get rid of the spring vacancy, the Left Party has no calculations.
– The investment must be long-term. We need a general improvement of care for the elderly, we cannot go back to what it was before the pandemic, says Nooshi Dadgostar.
Last spring, the Christian Democrats presented a proposal that also sought to set aside money for more permanent employment. KD leader Ebba Busch highlighted it again at a press conference on Wednesday.
– Now we have crisis situations and personnel situations and emergencies far beyond what is reasonable to request from health and care personnel. This proposal should have been implemented before the summer, but it is still relevant, Ebba Busch said.
Nooshi Dadgostar believes and hopes that V can obtain a parliamentary majority.
– I have high hopes that all parties will do a self-examination after this report and understand that this is a scandal. It is the elderly who have had to pay the price for the pandemic. We need to do something now.
The Left Party had a budget collaboration with the Löfven government from 2014 to 2018. Why did the care of the elderly not improve during those years?
– I think that all parties should come back to themselves and think about why there have been cuts in care for the elderly for so many years. I wish what we get out of this is not cheap political points, but really improved care for the elderly, says Nooshi Dadgostar.
The budget presented by the government for 2021 includes both greatly increased general state subsidies to municipalities and regions as well as a special investment of billions in the care of the elderly. Insufficient, consider V whose new proposal is money in addition to this.
