“The road broke in front of us”

All day a car has been flashing a few meters from the edge of the race in Gjerdrum.
In that car, four children were driving home early Wednesday morning, when suddenly the road broke and disappeared in front of them.
“We just braked and jumped,” 19-year-old Edvard Fiskum tells Dagbladet of Norway.
When they got out of the car, they didn’t believe what they saw.
The four 19-year-olds had angel guards.
They were also some of the first to alert the rescue service early Wednesday morning, when the landslide occurred at Ask in Gjerdrum, 40 km north of Oslo.
It was four in the morning and the boy band was heading home after a visit.
Even Nygaard Østreng was at the wheel. He, Edvard Fiskum and Bendik Andersen, would bring home a fourth friend, Felix.
Due to the snow and the slip, they drove slowly and carefully.
Then something happens.
– We only see that the road bends in front of us. Breaks. At first we don’t really understand what it is, but then we see that there is a hole in the ground, Edvard tells Dagbladet.

All day a car has been flashing a few meters from the edge of the race in Gjerdrum.
Even those who were driving first thought that it was a snowdrift that they saw, climbed abruptly in front of it, then realized that it was not, it was the road that had broken.
The boys quickly got out of the car and raced down the road, up the hill to a bend, where they called the rescue service.
Along the way, they see something they will soon forget.
When they turn around, they see – an abyss, where a road had just passed and there were houses.
Terrified people flock out of the remaining houses, asleep and waking up from the landslide.
Some have come out of houses that collapsed when the ground gave way.
Other houses sway on the edge of the abyss.
– They ran away and almost without clothes. Everyone was completely hysterical and just tried to escape, as far as possible. We tried to help them with jackets and things like that, the ones that didn’t wear that much, Bendik tells Dagbladet.

During the night until Thursday, 10 people are still missing.
Before jumping, they turned on the car’s warning lights and also stopped other cars on their way to the edge of the race.
Throughout the day, as rescue work was carried out and helicopters flew over the large gap in the ground, 300 times 700 meters wide, Even’s car held up and flashed, just a few meters from the edge of the race, and has shone into the abyss.
He even expects me to get the car back at some point, but that’s not the most important thing right now, on Wednesday night, when there are still ten people missing.
– There are other things to prioritize, says Even.
