There is baby happiness at Tropicarum in Kolmården.

King Castro’s Cuban crocodile has had ten cubs with Hillary.

– Actually they live in Skansenakvariet and they were just visiting us. It’s absolutely amazing, says Richard Sjödén, CEO of Tropicarum.

Ten Cuban crocodiles were born in Tropicarium, Kolmården.

The eggs were laid this spring by King Castro’s crocodile and Hillary, who generally live in Skansenakvariet and were involved in the incident last year when a man lost his arm under a lobster slice.

– They lived temporarily with us last winter and spring because their facility in Skansenakvariet was rebuilt. Against all odds, they laid eggs in the water, which is not normal. We were quick to rake them and we didn’t think they would hatch. This is absolutely incredible, says Richard Sjödén, CEO of Tropicarium.

Endangered species

Animal breeders lay the eggs in an egg hatchery and up to ten chicks first saw the light in August. They are now 6 inches long and have been allowed to swim in their new facility. The Cuban crocodile is an endangered species and has not previously been found in Tropicarium.

– It feels very good that now we can participate in the protection of this species, he says.

Castro and Hillary were born in 1972 and arrived in Sweden in 1981. Before that, they lived at the Moscow Zoo after Fidel Castro presented them to a Russian cosmonaut. His trip to Sweden began when Skansenakvariet owner Jonas Wahlström visited the Moscow Zoo.

– They said they would rebuild their terrarium house. The manager asked me if I could take care of the two crocodiles and I said yes. At the time it was easy to get permission for things like that, I just called the Swedish Board of Agriculture and explained the situation to them and they gave me the go-ahead to take them home to Sweden, Jonas Wahlström told Aftonbladet.
