King Carl Gustaf will speak in the plenary hall of the Riksdag during the inauguration of the Riksdag.

The Riksdag has started its new working year.

– I wish you strength, courage and wisdom in your important work, King Carlos XVI Gustavo told members when he inaugurated the Riksdag 2020-2021.

To reduce the risk of spreading the infection, only 190 of the 349 Riksdag members and half of the government ministers participate during the opening of the Riksdag.

King Carl Gustaf devoted most of his speech, in which he opened the Riksdag, to talking about the crown pandemic. He noted that he had never seen so many empty benches before, praised the work of the care staff and recalled that more than 5,800 people with covid-19 have died in Sweden.

– To the great pain of yours and the loss of our country.

– At the same time, other challenges persist: climate change, unemployment, crime and mental illness are among the problems that have the greatest impact on our future and are waiting to be solved. That work must not stop, said King Carl Gustaf.

He ended his speech by wishing the Riksdag members “strength, courage and wisdom” in their work.

– Our society continues to function and you, ladies and gentlemen, continue to manage the trust that citizens have placed in you.

– It is a responsibility that weighs especially in a year like this.

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia participated early Tuesday in the traditional service in the Great Church before the inauguration. Due to the crown pandemic, the ceremony is very small and much of the church is empty. However, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and his wife Ulla Löfven were among the church participants.
