It was in June 2019 that HD-Sydsvenskan in a long series of articles was able to tell about the children who were kept isolated in the Österlen idyll for just over 15 years. Relatives and acquaintances Kvällsposten has been in contact with have said they have been estranged from the family for many years.
In August 2018, four of the brothers were forcibly treated by Ystad social services. The fifth was of legal age and since then has lived with his parents.
Another child has come of age from forced care and has moved into his parents’ home.
The parents, Hans and Pernilla Brendestam, chose to speak in early November 2019 about the situation and the care of the children in the TV4 news magazine Kalla Fakta.
The couple have always denied that the children have been kept isolated and that they have been harmed by their living conditions.
– No, no and it is likely that children are a good proof of it. They are very sociable and that is what everyone who knows them says in principle, said Mother Pernilla on the program.
The preliminary investigation is closed
A preliminary investigation against the parents was previously closed, but this spring the prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson decided to reopen it. The investigation then addressed, among other things, the assault.
– There was a request for review and the material presented by the social welfare board in Ystad was quite scarce, but in that material there was information on the situation of children that makes it reasonable to assume that a crime has been committed. then the prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson told Kvällposten.
But now the preliminary investigation is closed again. That was decided by House Attorney Ingered Jigin on Friday.
– We have taken all investigative measures that we have found possible in the investigation, including assault, illegal coercion and illegal deprivation of liberty. We searched the house, seized storage media, listened to the three middle children, and listened to the individuals involved when the children were cared for in the fall of 2018. Despite all measures, we have not been able to find any criminal acts. It has stopped at care deficiencies, Ingegerd Jigin says in a press release.
Parents Hans and Pernilla Brendestam have not been notified of the suspicion.
In a text message to Kvällsposten in November 2019, they criticized social services in Ystad:
“They have painted a picture of us as parents that does not correspond to reality. It is remarkable that social services by all means want to paint us black in the media. ”
