Three weeks ago, Anders Tegnell told GP that the Swedish Public Health Agency expects local outbreaks in individual regions.
Since then, the spread of the infection has increased in various parts of the country. Which meant that the Public Health Agency had to toughen up local councils in Uppsala, Skåne, Stockholm, Västra Götaland and Östergötland.
Despite the increase, it is not possible to say with certainty that the number of cases we see now will affect the need for care in a few weeks, according to Tegnell.
– I think that connection is difficult, because there is almost no automaticity in it. In fact, we’ve lived with a fairly large spread of the infection (I mean, we’ve had pretty high numbers for several weeks) and it hasn’t had any dramatic impact on care so far, he tells the newspaper.
“There is still great hope”
Tegnell says that it is very difficult to say what will happen next, but he does not believe that Sweden will face the same dire situation as last spring.
– No, there is still great hope that, with the help of what we are doing now and based on the experiences we had last spring, we will not have to end up in that situation again. It is also the case that we now have a completely different capacity, he tells GP.
