In an open letter signed by 28 independent media, the reporters testify about the difficulties of reporting from the country’s hospitals, and that they are prohibited from interviewing care personnel.
Hungary has a population of 10 million and on Tuesday it reported 302 deaths from covid-19. It is the highest daily death toll in the country since the start of the pandemic. Also, hospitals are overcrowded, several doctors told Reuters.
However, the government denies that there is a shortage of care places and state media report that everything is under control. The government is striving to open up the economy by vaccinating the population with the Russian and Chinese vaccines, in addition to what it has bought through EU acquisitions.
Government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs accuses the “left-wing media” of spreading “fabricated news” to devalue the country’s health system.
“We must use hospitals for what they are intended, and not for taking photographs,” Kovacs wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
“Hungarian doctors and nurses are doing very well. Let them work!” The post continued.
According to figures from Johns Hopkins University in the US, about 21,000 people have died in the suites of covid-19 in Hungary, 650,000 have been infected.
